Phase 1 - New Product
Whirlaway participated in our customer’s first venture into a Solenoid/Pump based Anti-lock Brake system. As a result, many technical hurdles had to be overcome prior to production. Whirlaway supported the customer’s Engineering to research, prototype, and validate the most cost-effective assembly configuration, materials, processing and heat treatments to assure the necessary performance and durability. These included selective induction hardening and vacuum-hardening interface wear surfaces, as well as the development of 100% final-assembly air testing and assembly wash processes.

Possibly the most critical challenge was the development and implementation of world-class pump bore finishing technology in production to solve a performance and durability problem not encountered during prototyping. Final resolution included characterizing the bore through Design of Experiments to jointly develop geometry and finish specifications with Engineering which assured acceptable pump performance and leakage qualities throughout product life.
